A kosher symbol — a hechsher — is the trademark of the agency that certifies a product. The symbol tells you who stands behind it; the letters beside it tell you the product’s exact status.
Reading the letters
- Pareve — neither meat nor dairy.
- D — dairy (contains dairy or made on dairy equipment).
- P — kosher for Passover (not “pareve”).
Are all symbols equally reliable?
A plain “K” can’t be trademarked, so it doesn’t tell you who’s certifying. A recognized agency symbol is far more informative. Learn how to choose a certifier.
